How to properly apply your foundation?

Foundation is the essential step for perfect makeup. However, it is not so simple to know how to apply it for a discreet and successful result. To master the art of applying foundation and understand all its secrets, we interviewed Julien Michelet, Clinique France color specialist.

What are the steps to properly apply your foundation?

  1. Clean, smooth (exfoliated) and hydrated skin is essential for makeup to be done well!
  2. You can use a light amount of foundation on areas that tend to wear poorly during the day.
  3. Apply a thin layer of foundation to the entire face, placing the material in the center: on the forehead, nose and chin. We then stretch it completely – without putting it back – towards the outside of the face and the neck.
  4. We tap a concealer where we feel the need: dark circles, spots, spots…
  5. We powder everything by tapping so as not to move the foundation.

Which foundation applicator should you choose?

Everything is possible ! The brush is the most economical and natural, for a fresh complexion that doesn’t look like you have makeup on. The sponge is quick and effective, but it wastes a lot of product (you have to have a significant foundation budget!) and it is not at all hygienic. As for the finger, it is comfortable and allows you to really “feel” the material when applied. On the other hand, you have to blend a lot more than with a brush.

What are the 3 foundation mistakes to avoid?

We especially don’t choose a dark foundation because we want to look good. This turns orange or brown! It’s better to give yourself a healthy glow with transparent materials like sun powder, a bronzed effect gel or powder highlighters… If the foundation makes you look bad, it’s because it’s too pink, not too light. ! It is therefore essential to differentiate between the tone (light or dark) and the undertone (pink, yellow, orange).

We avoid putting a lot of material all over the face just to cover one or two pimples. The result will be thick and unflattering, so simply thicken the material on the affected area, while leaving healthy skin under a thin layer of foundation.

We don’t stop at the jaw! Even if the foundation is the right shade, it only takes a touch of heat or cold for it to oxidize and change color a little, so you shouldn’t blend it into the neck. We don’t miss out!
